Artistic Director Leslie GuytonLeslie Guyton

Leslie Guyton is a dance and theater director based out of Brooklyn, NY.  She's the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of The MoveShop.  She choreographs, directs and teaches throughout the US and internationally.  

 

The MoveShop's Racine D'or (2013), toured the US in the fall of 2013 and was funded in part by South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.  She was a master teacher at the International Contemporary Dance Lab in Chelyabinsk, Russia in 2013. She assistant directed Under Construction with Anne Bogart and SITI Company in 2011 at New York Live Arts.  

 

Her commercial work includes choreographing for the band Foster the People's Grammy-nominated music video Houdini, a dance mash-up advertisement for Adidas, and an ad for NRG featuring NFL athletes.

 

Along with collaborators Eliza Lay and Pauline Legras, Guyton was awarded Outstanding Choreography and Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical or Play with Music at the Planet Connections Theatre Festivity 2011 for Wanderlust (2011).  Guyton was awarded the 2012 Planet Connections Artist Grant and the APAP Cultural Exchange Fund Travel Grant.

 

Guyton observed rehearsals with Pina Bausch's Tanztheater Wuppertal in Germany, Spain, Portugal, England, and the US in 2007 and 2008.  Guyton was Assistant to the Executive Director at the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance from 2009-2010 and was a member of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab in 2009.

 

Under Guyton's direction, The MoveShop has created five evening-length pieces entitled Black Feathers (2005)Dust to Dust (2006)Moontides (2008)Wanderlust (2011) and Racine D'or (2013) as well as two shorter works entitled Snow Globe (2012), and Both Bitter and Sweet Flow from the Same Fountain (2013).  Her works have been presented at such institutions as Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Samford University in Birmingham, AL, The Forum in Hazard, KY, Dixon Place in NYC, La MaMa ETC in NYC, John Hancock Hall in Boston, MA, the A.R.T.'s Club Oberon in Cambridge, MA, Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center, The Brecht Forum in NYC, Montauk's Sole East and Movement Research at Dance Theater Workshop in NYC.
